WE’RE STILL HERE, Starr Bar, Brooklyn, NY, 2017

WE’RE STILL HERE began with an open call to artists, activists, bodies, and voices targeted by the recent election results and by the ideologies they represent. Artists from around the country and the world responded to this call with work in a variety of media. Some of the pieces in the show respond directly to the 2016 presidential election, and others engage related ideas, emotions, and actions: racial oppression and empowerment, economic injustice, the spectacle of celebrity, international solidarity, biased reporting, community activism, gender binaries, among others. The current oppressions and suppressions, inequalities and injustices are not new; but neither are resistance and solidarity. We have a responsibility to use our creativity to build community and facilitate expression. Art is personal. Art is political. Art is for the people. We have always been fighting, organizing, and supporting one another, and we will continue to do so. We’re still here.
